Spring Term 2023 Newsletter

A very warm welcome to all the new students and their families who joined us this term as well as Miss Lucy, our contemporary teacher. What a term this has been, with record numbers taking exams, both at the RAD in London and in Brighton; our first time performing at festival and many student successes! A big thank you to our amazing team of teachers and also to parents and carers for your ongoing support.

Latest News - Sussex Festival

Our dancers have just had a wonderful 3 days performing their solos at Sussex Festival of Performing Arts at Roedean Theatre. This is our first time at festival and we have one more solo to go next week. Results so far:

Zak came first with 88 marks and won the choreography cup for his own piece in the choreography class (ages 11 - 21).

Ella came 4th with 87 marks in a very large modern / jazz section and qualified for All England Regionals next year. Her piece from the musical Hamilton was choreographed by Miss Sam.

Matilda and Lois came 2nd and 3rd with 88 and 87 marks respectively in their very large ballet section. They have also qualified for All England Regionals next year. Anya choreographed and coached both solos.

Well done to everyone! We are all very proud of your achievements.

Student News

We are delighted for Alyssa’s recent success in applying for vocational colleges. Following two audition rounds she has been offered a place at Rambert School to start in September. She was also offered places at London School of Contemporary Dance at The Place and Northern School of Contemporary Dance.

Great news for Emily too. She has been successful with auditions for vocational colleges and has secured offers from Northern School of Contemporary Dance and London School of Contemporary Dance at The Place.

Bella has performed with London Children’s Ballet touring company this term for their 2023 season. Marcus will be performing next term.

Marcus has also passed his assessment so will continue as a Mid Associate at The Royal Ballet School next year.

Marcus and Joel have both been offered places on the selective Royal Ballet School Summer Intensive. Three other students - Lois, Bella and Sophia have been placed on the wait list.

Three students were recently selected for final auditions for National Youth Ballet’s 2023 Performance company.

Results will be out at the end of this month!

First Pointe Shoes…

Exciting times for our Intermediate Foundation group.

Following detailed pre-pointe preparation and a thorough assessment in the first part of this term, they travelled to London during February half term to be fitted for their first pointe shoes!

Royal Academy of Dance Exams

London RAD Exams

We had a record number of students (14) taking their vocational exams at RAD HQ in London this term covering the full range from Intermediate Foundation to Advanced 1.

Local RAD Exams

We also had a record 40 dancers taking Graded exams and Class Awards in our Brighton studio just last week.

Well done to everyone for working so hard and now fingers crossed for results!

Last Term’s Results

Congratulations to all those who took exams at the end of the Autumn term.

Our dancers achieved excellent results including a full set of distinctions from our first ever Solo Performance Award (for Grade 5)!

Dance Genres & Classes We Offer

Contemporary & Jazz

Did you know that as well as ballet, we offer Contemporary and Jazz classes from Grade 2 upwards. Dancers today are required to be more versatile than ever. Why not try a new class next term. To book a free trial, email info@altadance.co.uk, call or text 07876 492899.

Conditioning Classes

Our Conditioning for ballet (and pointe) and PBT (Progressing Ballet Technique) classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays are a wonderful supplement to dance training. This term the younger group have been working on foot and lower limb strength and the senior group core stability, upper back mobility as well as strengthening for pointe.

Adult Classes

As well as after school and evening classes, we run daytime adult ballet classes on a drop in or block booking basis. Click here for more information.

Some adults also join our higher grade and vocational classes and have taken RAD exams with us.

Full Uniform Service

We provide a full uniform service and have partnerships with a number of UK dancewear suppliers. Our bespoke uniform is provided by Dansez, a company that produces sustainable dancewear.

We can provide matching skin tone tights and shoes and advise on shoes (and pointe shoes).

As well as leotards, cardigans, tights and shoes, we have our smart Alta Academy of Dance jackets, which are perfect to wear to and from class and to warm up during class.

We have booked the Lecture Theatre at Cardinal Newman School for our end of year Summer Showcase.

All classes will showcase a selection of work done during the term and you will have the chance to see some of our festival solos and other work.

Summer Term Dates 2023

Monday 17th April to Saturday 15th July
Half term week: Monday 29th May to Sunday 4th June.

Bank Holidays:
Lessons as normal on Bank Holiday Monday 1st May.
NO LESSONS on Saturday 6th May and Monday 8th May (King’s Coronation).
