Our Story
Having taught in Brighton and Hove for many years, Royal Academy of Dance Examiner, Deborah Mercer, founded Alta Academy of Dance in 2020 with just 10 students.
Alta Academy is now a thriving dance school of some 250+ dancers attending classes in Classical Ballet, Jazz, Contemporary and Modern classes in Brighton and Hove from preschool to Advanced 2.
Alta Academy of Dance prides itself on its reputation for excellence, inclusivity and forward-thinking teaching methods. Our pool of highly experienced, qualitifed and passionate teachers aim to instill a love of dance in all those who come through our doors and empower students to become the best dancer they can be. Catering for those who simply love to dance as well as those aiming for a professional career in dance, we provide a unique, nurturing environment for our dancers to thrive and realise their full potential.
Dancers at Alta Academy have the chance to enjoy opportunities such as graded and vocational exams, audition workshops and regular performance opportunities.

Our name ‘Alta’ originates from Spanish / Italian meaning ‘high’.
Our name reflects our ethos to encourage you to aim high and become the best dancer you can be under our expert and careful guidance.

Working towards RAD ballet exams or class awards is a highly rewarding experience which will give you a tangible sense of achievement and useful qualifications. We pride ourselves on our current track record of 100% pass rate with high merits, distinctions and high distinctions.
However, the training at Alta Academy of Dance goes beyond purely teaching an examination syllabus. We work with you individually to build a deeper understanding of technique and artistry.
